Detaching a work from its creator’s reality and its broader context while evaluating it — and instead situating its impact at the point of interaction between the work and the viewer/interpreter — can, to some extent, liberate interpretation. However, if the focus lies on the connection between art and politics, it becomes almost inevitable to map and analyze the intentions and tendencies of the agents involved in production, patronage, distribution, and interpretation. This talk, which accompanies the selection “An Age In Flames”, attempts to do just that — taking as its starting points Emre Yeksan’s video “Park”, which explores the shaded history of Kültürpark through found footage and texts, and Erkal Uran’s photography exhibition “Stain”.
