Considered to be the first film in Turkish cinema to portray strikes and workers' rights, “Those Awakening in the Dark” focuses on the labour fight of working class in a paint factory in Istanbul. Ekrem, who works at the factory, is close friends with Turgut, the son of the owner. When three of the workers who defend their rights are dismissed, the union decides to go on strike. Young Turgut, who takes over the factory after the sudden death of his father, is torn between the responsibility of being the boss and the labourers' struggle for their rights.
